The opening text of the book gives a short description of each character. ... He tells the family that a girl has committed suicide and that in one way or another they are responsible. Mr Birling was responsible for sacking the girl from his factory. Sybil Birling, who seemed to think that all members of the lower classes, is beneath her and her family. ... Sheila Birling was responsible because she got the girl sacked from a shop where she works. ... There is still one final twist at the end. ... A man has to make his own way / has to look after himself” and, referring to the working class, “If you don’t come down sharply on some of these people they’ll soon be asking for the earth”. ... She feels bad about it afterwards, but this doesn’t take away the fact that she didn’t think about her actions in the first place. ... He hovers over the characters acting much like their conscience, he is described as creating an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness He speaks carefully and has a disconcerting habit of looking hard at the person he addresses, forcing the truth out of each character in question. ... "We dont live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other. ... Eva is one of the most important characters in the play yet the audience never actually sees her. ... When she meets Gerald she is quite desperate for help and would have been relieved to have somebody to rely on even if she may have known the relationship wasn’t going to last. ... Mrs Birling was one of these voluntary helpers yet she refused to help this poor girl at a time when she most needed it. ... Birling is questioned she doesn’t realise what has been going on, she states how the inspector has made a big impact on Sheila, “we often do on the young ones. ... The worse thing is afterwards even though she knew the girl died she didn’t feel any remorse at all. ... He hopes we will realise how the younger generations are the ones who can change the society in which we live.
