Measuring Length Purpose To take the measurements of various items using the metric system and implement the rules pertaining to significant figures when stating measured values and calculations. Apparatus -Metric ruler -Large wood block -Small wood block -Textbook -Rectangular prism Procedure 1. Take the large wood block, small wood block, textbook, and rectangular prism and find the length, width, and height of each with the metric ruler. When taking the measurements of each object, be sure to measure to the nearest millimeter and then make an estimation based on a tenth of a millimeter. Thus, the numbers of the measurements will all be in significant figures. Put these measurements into table 1. 2. Find the volume in cubic centimeters of the large wood block, small wood block, textbook, and rectangular prism. The number resulting should be in the same number of significant figures to which each particular object had. Put the result of this calculation into table 1. 3. Take the textbook and using the meter stick, measure the width of a single page in millimeters. It is okay to use estimation when taking this measurement. When finished, record the measurement into table 2. 4. Next, measure the thickness of 50,75, and 100 pages to the nearest millimeter. After taking each various measurement of pages, find what the average thickness of one single page would be. Put these measurements with the measurement of one single page from above into table 2. The variables within this experiment were the measurements of the various objects and the thickness’ for each number of pages. Further, the independent variables of the measurements were controlled by the dimensions of each particular object and the averages were controlled by the thicknesses of each set of pages.
