A topic of much controversy is the comparison of slavery between the English colonies and Brazil. Though it is widely believed that slavery is identical through out the world, there are many facets, which refute this belief. ... Degler states that the church’s role in slavery was identical to that of the similarities in law v. ... Other evidence supporting the idea that manumission was more frequent in Brazil is Degler’s statistic that in 1860 the number of free blacks reached its maximum under slavery (eight times as many slaves as free blacks). After the abolition of slavery in the United States the free black population increased significantly in Brazil, and in 1872 the number of free blacks was twice that of the slave population.
