The story starts with Bilbo Baggins finding a ring which he claims. This ring is actually being sought after by the creature gollum who had accidentally lost it. Gollum and others are still search of the ring which is in a very unexpected place where Bilbo has grown old with. At a birthday party of Bilbos he makes as if he vanished into thin air but a wizard named Gandolf catches him and tells Bilbo the ring must be left behind. Frodo is then left with all of the possesions of Bilbo including the ring.
