Hitler’s Rise to Power Michael Cusack questioned, “How could a madman and a gang of murderous thugs take over a modern enlightened nation, slaughter millions of innocent people, and wage war against most of Europe”(10)? Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria. He married three times. In December 1908 his mother died of cancer. This had a major effect on his adolescence. He spent four years in the Realschule in Linz, and left school when he was sixteen hoping to become a painter. In October 1907 Hitler tried to get into the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, but he was rejected twice. While in Vienna he received his first lesson in politics. He learned by studying Karl Lueger. During his study, Hitler gradually picked up the stereotyped, brutal ways that raged in his heart until his death.
