Sons of Liberty went out and threatened the merchants to cancel their orders – except in Massachusetts – the governor told the merchants they couldn’t send it back – the payable tax was due because the boats were in port. They had to pay the taxes and then send the boats back – if you refuse to pay the taxes then I will seize and sell and you will have to pay the China Company for the tea. The Sons of Liberty took and threw the tea into Boston harbor – “Boston Tea Party” – 342 crates of tea – in today’s value $1.5 million – Parliament was very upset by these actions – and therefore formed the Coercive Acts. “Coercive Acts” – These were called the “Intolerable Acts” by Americans – the Massachusetts legislature was fired and the port of Boston closed to try and teach better behaviors of the people. For a year protests occurred which lead to Americans killing British soldiers – we wanted our rights. July of 1776 Americans stopped killings to try and change Parliaments decision/mind – instead we declared independence and killed British soldiers in order to gain independence. This took years with the help of France – therefore Parliament gave up in 1783 – Americans got their independence – not cost effective to keep American territories. The success of the American Revolution proves that the “State of Nature” arguments by John Locke were correct. PROJECT ORGANIZATION: 1.
