Survival is very important in the society in which they dwell in and family is needed to survive. Throughout the world, a normal family would have two children and two parents but this is not lived by the people who inhabit in wattle beach. There are many controversies between certain people and this is why this society is not like any other normal society that we live in. In this novel, numerous events, some important, influenced and changed the main character, Carl. ‘What are you doing here? You’re mucking up my life. I can’t stand it,’ Carl predicted. Kerry, Carl’s mum, left home for her so-called "mum’s holiday", but never returned. This brought a new face to Carl, as he now had to protect and provide for his younger brother Harley.
