Quality of life is the ability to enjoy the things that make you happy. It can be attained my fostering one’s personal interests. However if we never learn what it is that interests us, then we will never reach the quality of life that we are looking for in the end. Thus education about personal interests is the means to that end. High school is the ideal time to foster growth in this area. There are already extra-curricular activities that act as a means of broadening personal interests, but they do not fall into the actual curriculum. Allotted time should be set aside in the high school curriculum for the sole purpose of fostering individuality. Furthermore credit should be given for these classes in the same manner that credit is given for academic classes such as math. Quality of life is a byproduct of learning about one’s personal interests. As Horace Mann puts it, “some to toil and earn, others to seize and enjoy”. (Mann 143) This means that a person can go through their life with just the facts that they need to survive, or they can enjoy their life by grasping hold of their individuality and use it as a tool for the betterment of quality of life.
