The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether By Edgar Allan Poe 1. Madman – A man who is or seems mentally ill. Lunatic – Suffering from lunacy; insane. 2. The word lunatic originated from the word luna – which in Latin means moon. Lunatic means a person who is affected by the moon. 3. Our society treats people that they view as mad like they are very small children. They put them into homes or places where they can be watched 24/7. 4. Some ways you can tell if people are mad are – what they are saying, for example, if they are making no sense or are not speaking properly; and people’s gestures and motions. 5. The story is being told from a 1st person limited perspective. The reader can feel exactly what the author is feeling and see everything through the author’s eyes. 6. Some information we learn in the exposition of the story is that the story takes place in autumn, and that the protagonist is traveling through France and visits an insane asylum.
