The conflict in this story is at the end when his store manager, Lengel, tells the three young girls that they are not dressed appropriately and also not to return to the A & P again unless their shoulders are covered. ... Now because of his irrational decision he will have to go home and face his parents and explain why he quit the job at the A & P because of a remark that he didn’t like the manager making to the customers. ... When they enter the A & P and start walking around he speaks of them like they are more like objects then people, which is ironic in the way that toward the end of the story he decides to quit his job because of the way that Lendel embarrasses “Queenie and her sheep” in front of the store crowd.
