Waking an Artist: How the Arts Effected
Ednas Rebirth in The Awakening
Kate Chopins The Awakening is a novel about the rebirth of a woman living in nineteenth century New Orleans. ... By using the music played by Mademoiselle Reisz and Ednas emotional reaction to it, as well as describing Edna as a striving artist, Chopin made it clear that her main character was searching of an outlet of herself. ... Throughout The Awakening Edna searches for a mode of self expression that she does not yet have, but it is not until she is able to paint that she joins the ranks of Mademoiselle Reisz in her ability to create beauty and convey the awakening inside her. ... As the music filled the room Edna wept: "It was not the first time she had heard an artist at the piano. ... She was waking up. ... The act of self-expression brought her immense pleasure: "A subtle current of desire passed through her body, weakening her hold upon the brushes and making her eyes burn"(97) However, since Chopin used painting as a symbol of Ednas learning to express herself, she also made it clear that spending a few afternoons with paper and brushes was not enough to deserve being called an artist just as committing a few rebellious acts was not enough to merit an awakening.
