The play Macbeth is centered on a seemingly strong character, Macbeth. At the beginning Macbeth is morally, physically and mentally sound, but he soon begins to decline in each of these characteristics.
Macbeth begins the play not believing it was possible for him to become the Thane of Cawdor, let alone king. ... Later Macbeth begins to weigh in his mind the prospect of being king, but he still isn’t willing to do anything about it. ... Shortly thereafter, we see the first indication of Macbeth’s decline in moral values. ... The planning of the king’s assassinations would seem the final decline for any man’s moral system, but Macbeth shows his last few shreds of righteousness-if it can be called that-by wanting the kings death to be the last bad thing that he must do.
