The behaviourist B.F Skinner wrote a book called ‘Verbal Behaviour in 1957 which described his theories of language acquisition.
One of his theories was called the Operant Conditioning Theory and was based around the idea of children learning through a simple process of Imitation and Reinforcement. ...
Skinner claimed that no complicated internal mechanisms were needed for this acquisition process and it was virtually no different to the experiments he performed on the rats. However there are lots of theories that object to this theory;
a) Children all over the world learn language at roughly the same age despite differences in their culture, language or teaching techniques. If his theory were correct then the children should learn language at different rates.
b) Children make up words like ‘mices’ and ‘goed’ that will not have been copied from their parents.
c) There are children who are unable to speak so cannot imitate their parents yet they still have a normal understanding of language.
