Marco Polo: An Italian adventurer; considered to be an indirect discoverer of the new world because of his nearly 20 year sojourn in China. He returned to Europe in 1295 and described things like rose-tinted pearls and golden pagodas. These descriptions stimulated European desired for a cheaper route to the treasures of the East. In 1298, Marco Polo served as a captain of a Venetian galley that participated in a battle between the fleets of Venice and Genoa. He was taken prisoner by the Genoese. While jailed, he dictated to a fellow prisoner what he saw and heard while he traveled. Marco Polo's book, "The Travels of Marco Polo", first published in French, is probably the most famous travel book in history. It was the basis of the first accurate maps of Asia. The book helped Christopher Columbus in his explorations. Marco Polo died in 1324 when he was 70 years old. When on his death bed, he said "I didn't tell half of what I saw, because no one would have believed me." Francisco Pizzarro: Conqueror of South America. “Crushed the Incas of Peru” in 1532 and added a huge hoard of booty to Spanish coffers. Treasure from Mexico and mines of Potosi (In present day Bolivia) gave Spain great wealth by 1600. In 1539, Francisco appointed his brother Gonzalo Pizarro governor of Quito. Francisco's greed and ambition, extreme even in a conquistador, had, however, offset his resourcefulness, courage, and cunning. By alienating the Almagro faction he paved the way for conspiracy. A band of assassins surprised him at dinner, and although he fought desperately, he was overpowered and slain. Juan Ponce De Leon: Credited with the discovery of Florida. As a teenager he joined Spanish forces that eventually defeated the Moors of Canada, and in 1493 he accompanied Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America. The Spain culture travel by the new world at the same time with the Spain conqueror. The conqueror, soldier, priest or navigator, was the representative of a new civilization that is taken with him to America. The conqueror in this case, Juan Ponce de Leon founder captain of the island and the first governor, he was always the one who past the material aspect, forcing himself to reculting the people for the enterprise, arms and to equip the ship; to found some village, to carry animals and plants and evangelized and christianize the Indians spread out among the colonizer.
