Orpheus was the son of Apollo and the Muse Calliope. Many cults of the time centered on his example. He was a poet and a musician who descended into Hades realm where he writes of purifying the soul and such topics. Orphism is the teachings of an ancient Greek philosophical cult which exerted great influence on Greek culture, and later on Western mysticism and occultism. It began in the sixth century BC, and is attributed to the mythical Orpheus. The chief teachings are of reincarnation, a Greek version of Karma, a history of the universe which was formed by Chronos who formed an egg and created the first king of the gods -- whom Zeus supplanted and fathered Dionysus -- the divine child. Other teachings are that the body is the prison of the soul, animals were not to be killed or eaten, the good were to be rewarded while the evil were to be punished in Nether World, and teachings of self-denial and seriousness in religious matters. Orphism also had a great impact on alchemy. 2. Mithras was originally a Persian god of divine power, and appeared in the Greco-Roman world in the first century C.E. Many scholars identified Mithras as foreseeing invisible forces controlling the universe. The Roman cult of Mithras is known as a "mystery" cult. Mithraism is the ancient Roman mystery cult of the god Mithras. Roman worship of Mithras began sometime during the early Roman empire, perhaps during the late first century of the Common Era, and flourished from the second through the fourth centuries C.E.
