The Authors of these stories or poems create their own characters by using a variety of techniques. In A Rose For Emily, Faulkner creates Emily by using characterization. “No visitor had passed since she ceased giving china-painting lessons eight or ten years earlier.”(394). Here, he expresses how Emily attempts remove herself from this society through her actions. He characterizes Emily by telling us of her physical characteristics and uses other characters to show Miss Emily’s pride. "None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such" (395). Harte creates Mr. Oakhurst, in The Outcasts Of Poker Flat also by characterizing him. Harte takes a fine gambler that has been kicked out of town, because of his “wrong-doings” and turns him into a hero. Harte makes him a leader and very sacrificial when he has to take care of all these other people. “ ‘And you?’ asked Tom Simson. ‘I’ll stay here’ was the curt reply” (483). Harte shows, through Mr. Oakhurst’s actions, his true characteristics in this story. Poe uses symbols, in “The Raven”, to create the speaker in the poem.
