Nathan Smith Mr. Ackert 30 Sept. 2003 Newton Second Law Air Track Lab Part I. Purpose Statement Newton’s second law states, “The acceleration of a body is directly proportional to the net force on it and inversely proportional to its mass.” The lab is going to demonstrate this law by using an air-track, cart, and different masses. The 500-gram mass will have the fastest acceleration because more force is being applied to it. Part II. Materials 2 meter Air Track with a non friction pulley, Cart which mass 551.4 grams, 50 gram, 100 gram, 250 gram, and 500 gram masses, duct tape, sharpie, overhead projector paper, video camcorder, scissors, proper recording media, wet/dry vacuum with blowing action, 8lb. Fishing line, and computer equipment to calculate velocity and displacement. Part III. Procedure 1. Place the air track 110 cm off of the ground. Make sure it is level. 2. Connect the wet/dry vacuum to the air track (use duct tape if connection is not secure) plug the vacuum in.
