Summarise the main ideas of John Dewey and Jurgen Habermas regarding the public and public opinion, highlighting the similarities and differences. ...
Dewey and Habermas both have very different ideas about the public and public opinion. The best way to compare these two gentlemen’s ideas is to first look at Habermas main ideas first and then to compare that to Dewey. Therefore we must look at how each interprets what the public is and how they interpret what public opinion is and how it comes about, as well as how media plays a role. ...
First we must look at Habermas and what his main ideas were in regards to public and public opinion. It is important to state that Habermas was Eastern based, which illustrates some discourse behind his ideas. Basically Habermas states that ‘The public has changed from “culture –debating” to “culture-consuming” (J.Habermas, 1989). What Habermas is saying by this statement is that the communication in-between the public has changed from people communicating on equal terms and discussing issues and discourses to the public being taken over and told what their discourses are and what they are to think on certain issues. In this way the culture-consuming is referring to a set culture which has become the only culture within the public, in this way no real free though and discussion: culture-debating. This idea links to Habermas thoughts on the public opinion.
According to Habermas the public opinion is completely manipulated and there is no real public opinion. We can see this through his statement ‘Public opinion is to be understood in reference to way the politically dominant strive to bring a populations dispositions into harmony with their political doctrine and structure.
