The area of study known as philosophy is generally believed to have begun in Ancient Greece with the speculation about the underlying nature of the physical world by individuals such as Thales and Anaximander. The word philosophy was first used by Pythagoras and is derived from the words, philia, meaning wisdom, and sophia, meaning knowledge. Therefore, philosophy literally means “love of knowledge”. Philosophy is most concerned with the attainment of wisdom and the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus asserted that wisdom is not knowing a multitude of facts, but having a unified view of reality. His rival Parmenides constantly tried to prove the opposite views and gave philosophy its reputation as “a severe discipline of reasoned knowledge”.
