Pepperoni Sil-Vout-Plais! My major failure in communication came during this past March Break and started innocently enough. It was lunch time for us in Cassis, France so I went looking for pepperoni pizza. “Un pizza sil-vout-plais,” I said to the gentleman behind the counter. “Toppings?” he asked hesitantly in English. “Pepperoni et cheese,” I answered trying to practice my rusty French while I had a chance. “Pepperoni???” he asked puzzled, “poivres??” I realized that he didn’t have the slightest clue as to what pepperoni was, he was talking about green peppers. “Umm… viande!” I blurted as the word for meat finally came to me. “Jambon? Or ham? ” he replied. “No, c’est un autre viande,” is what I told him next. He turned to his sign behind him on the wall and pointed to “Bouef Haché” or ground beef in English.
