Essentially, unions are successful in communicating that they are valid and a must in today’s society. Unions are significant because they were established to make sure that every one receives equal rights and conditions (in their workplace) no matter the era. ... Trade unions exist to collectively represent and protect workers in the improvement of the quality of their working lives.’
RESPONSE 1
Through out the various centuries that unions have been around, it has been stated that unions and unionists are troublemakers who never really achieve anything and are a waste of time and money. ... Unions and unionists set out to ensure that their members are not disadvantaged in any way. The unions have achieved great benefits for their members. Since the formation of the ACTU in 1927, they have projected a voice for the unions in all negotiations with the federal government to argue issues that are vital especially to the blue-collar workers so that they are granted suitable wages, work standards before the Industrial Relations Commission. Between the late 1970’s and the 1990’s, unions have worked to have laws changed so that the workforce was introduced with equality, meaning women were paid up to 25 per cent less than men for conducting the same task requirements. Unions successfully argued that women were just as qualified as their male colleagues, and should be paid accordingly.
Although in the past and present there can be some trouble, it has been made clearly evident that unions are not trouble makers and that there achievements are far greater and more influential that the losses. ... If unions were not around, then it would be doubtless that working conditions today would be like working back in the stone age.

“In the year 2001, unions are not really significant, because they were established in times when thing were much different to what they are today”. Unions developed in the late 1800’s during the time of great economic population growth when they steadily increased their membership in the workforce. ... Although unions were said to be more relevant in the past than today, unions are still fighting for all the entitlements that they were in the 1800’s.
