... ” (Genesis 1:28)
It can be noted throughout the modern evolution of the human race, a sense of superiority that leads us to carry out our lives with very little regard for the natural world around us. ... In the name of taste, abundance, cost, and nutrition, our food has been altered to the extent that we now regularly eat strawberries containing genetic material from fish. ... This school of thought heralds genetic breakthroughs that will make food more abundant and healthy, medical procedures that will screen for disease years before symptoms develop, and farms that need less fertile soils, in turn preserving rainforest habitat. ... In this essay I will attempt to analyze arguments from both sides and come to a conclusion regarding the role of genetic engineering in our world today.
The following is a table chronicling advances in genetic research:
1953 James Watson and Francis Cricks manuscript describing the double helical
structure of DNA is published in "Nature". This marked the beginning of the
modern era of genetics
1966 The genetic code is cracked, the 3 nucleotide base sequence (codon)
determining each of the 20 human made amino acids is found.
1981 The first cloned fish, a golden carp, is made by a Chinese scientist
1984 The first genetically engineering vaccine is created
1987 FrostBan is announced, a genetically engineered bacterium, enabling strawberry
and potato crops to resist low temperatures
1990 The Human Genome Project is launched as an international effort to map
out and sequence the entire human genome
1994 The FDA approves the FlavrSavr tomato, the first ever genetically engineered
whole food to make it to the mass market
1994 The gene for breast cancer is discovered
1997 The world hears of scientists in Scotland that successfully clone the first
mammal, Dolly the sheep
1999 The first chapter of the Book of Life in which the first chromosome of the
human genome is fully decoded and published

In the new millennium, we have seen an even faster growth in the area of genetic engineering. Talk of stem cells being harvested from aborted baby fetuses, plants that are genetically programmed not to reproduce, and cloned human beings have started to alarm the world.
