We are in an A&P store in a small town, north of Boston, in the puritan world of New England. For an obviously poor, young guy, like Sammy, narrator and central character of the story, having a job there could be almost a career. It means not only the respect of the citizens, but also steadiness with quite enough money to live by. But the township is so depressed that people sleepwalk through their day and pedantically attempt to control their environment. No wonder that the stepping of three young, pretty girls into this calm convenience store “in nothing but bathing suits” starts to become a scandal. The reactions are different. The old store manager argues with them about that it is not morally right for ladies walking in town with bare shoulders. He also tells it to the girls, that they will never be allowed to step into his shop when they are “not decently dressed”.
