Villagers gather together in the central square for the annual lottery. There is much excitement and interest as the rituals of the event start. First she is telling us that the idyllic life we imagine to be present in America, "the good old days", has terrible secrets. She is telling us about the horror that supports the "good" life, too. Secondly she is illustrating the sacrifice of women.
