Love and Sex in 1984
In his book 1984 George Orwell presents a disturbing look at totalitarian government. ... The Thought Police can detect even one’s innermost thoughts, even those regarding sex and love. In Oceania sex and love are enemies of the state; one of the most horrible crimes one can commit. Love and sex are enemies of the state and this can be inferred because of the personal allegiances they form, they dilute the power of an all seeing, all controlling government, and any form of unorthodox thought is unacceptable in 1984.
One reason love and sex are enemies of the state in Orwell’s 1984 is that these two things form personal allegiances between the persons involved. To love someone you must trust them, and in Oceania trust is to be avoided. ... During their love affair Winston and Julia have an allegiance to each other while they rebel against the party by the affair. ...
Love and sex are also banned because they dilute the power of an all seeing, all controlling government as in 1984. ... Love is the only emotion that is equal to hate in intensity, if you have love in such a society it cannot function. ... Along with hate, the society is also fueled by sexual frustration, due to lack of meaningful sex and love. Julia illustrates this point on page 110 when she says:
When you make love you’re using up energy; and afterwards you feel happy and don’t give a damn for anything.
