Banquo’s role in Macbeth
For the first half of the play, Banquo is very obviously presented by Shakespeare as a parallel figure to Macbeth. ...
But Banquo also stands in contrast to his kinsman Macbeth and is important to the story and action of the play. He shares the experience with Macbeth of meeting the witches for the first time. Apart from the prophecies for Macbeth there is also the prophesy that Banquo’s descendants will be kings. So both men are tempted by ambition, but Banquo’s reaction to the witches’ prophecy for him is far more casual than Macbeth’s reaction to his prophecies. The big difference is that Banquo will not take matters into his own hands, as does Macbeth. Banquo is even suspicious of the witches and their equivocal words from the start. He warns Macbeth of their power to corrupt in Act 1, scene 3, lines 122-5:
