Traditionally, various forms of technology based collaboration, such as consortia, licensing, strategic alliances and joint ventures were perceived as methods to acquire technologies from outside, substituting the firm¡¦s own internal R&D; however, more recently, advocates of concepts such as core competences & knowledge management have suggested that technology-based collaboration may serve a more subtle purpose- that of acquiring skills or competences, thus suggesting that collaborations are used to complement (rather than substitute) a firm¡¦s own internal R&D.
Firms may choose to acquire or develop technologies through collaborations in order to:
„« Develop a product which requires the ¡¥fusion¡¦ of two or more (previously unrelated) technologies- for instance the new ¡¥ Orange SVP smartphone¡¦- which may be described as a computer packaged in a mobile phone- was the result of a joint venture between Microsoft, Orange and HTC (a small handset manufacturer). While Microsoft could have developed its own mobile phone technology or the handset manufacturer could have developed its own software technology doing so would have been both costly and time consuming.
