IN THE END IT’S UP TO THE READER
People from all walks of life generally have an opinion or judgment about other people or groups of people. ... Toni Morrison, in her work Recitatif, provokes the reader’s preconceptions of race, which historically has always been in the forefront of society. ... Just plain observation of other races earlier in one’s life can impact what the reader thinks or says about other races. ... Because one will keep all of these learned observations in their memory and think that all people of that race act the same way, this will culminate with the reader generally making a clear, albeit mistaken, distinction between his or her race and other races. By placing specific and subtle stereotype-like phrases throughout the story Morrison challenges the reader to place a race with the characters who otherwise would not have any direct delineation of their origin. This is done purposely because generally humans will instinctively want to recognize the character’s race while reading about them.
