Nadia Ranney DBQ Outline American History Lynch p. 9 9-15-03 THESIS: The two colonies developed differently because they differed in religious beliefs, values and intentions. 1. One difference between how the two settlements developed was the difference in religious beliefs. Chesapeake · They were made up of Protestants and Catholics. · They weren’t very religious. · They started off coming to the new world for religious purposes, but that quickly changed. “…’We did admire, how it was possible such wise men could so torment themselves with such absurdities, making religion their colour, when all their aim was profit.’” New England · They were Puritans who based every moment of their lives on religion. · They believed that they were sent to the new world by God. Document A: “…so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and by-word through the world.” -This line verifies the fact that they believed that God backed them up in their quest to the new world. 2. The two colonies also had strong values that contributed to how the colonies turned out. Chesapeake · They were all about profit and success through riches and resources of the new world. · They didn’t have time to form a proper community, let alone houses, because they were so focused on creating profits and successes from the tobacco in the Chesapeake region. · They did not value their indentured slaves and often sold them, traded them, and treat them with great disrespect and injustice.
