Pennant News 20/06/03 LATE NEWS - Our Division Seven team carried the flag for Kingston Beach this year, being the only team to make the finals. They went down fighting in the final and in recognition of their achievement in reaching the final, we will start the final Pennant News for this season with the report by team captain Kevin Badcock. "Kingston Beach lost a close fought match to favourites Claremont in the final of the Division 7 Pennant played at Claremont on Sunday 15 June 2003. The match was played in blustery conditions and our players put up a good fight against the competition leaders. The result of the match was 4 and 3 loss which is the same score that Claremont beat Kingston Beach in each of the two roster matches played this season The game finished in dramatic circumstances, with the match tied at three games each when Claremont player David Bliss came from 3 down with 3 holes to play and defeated captain Kevin Badcock on the 19th hole. Kingston's Neil Opbroek was also required to take his match to the 19th where he recorded a 1 up victory. Other Kingston Beach members to record victories were Malcolm Godfrey who won 4 and 3 and Rob Windsor who won his match 3 and 2. Dan Stonehouse, Graeme Hills and Chris Alomes all lost their matches 2 up, 3 and 2, and 2 and 1 respectively. Overall the team performed well this season with six of the seven team who played in the final, enjoying their first season of Pennant. Brian Roberts and Paddy Skelly were also valuable members of the team during the year. It is always a tough call to defeat Claremont at Claremont, but they deserved their victory having lost only one match this season. It was great to see a good roll up of other Kingston Beach members to support the team in the final. Unfortunately it wasn't our day. On behalf of the Division 7 team members I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Sandy Watt for his assistance with co-ordinating pennant teams this year. His efforts have certainly made captaining a side so much easier. Many thanks Sandy." Stop Press !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Pennant Dinner will be held in the Clubhouse on Friday 25th July 2003 3 Course Dinner $18.50 7.00 for 7.30 Further details will be advised shortly Editor's Summary Another disappointing season in terms of final standings, but there were encouraging signs in terms of commitment, determination to learn from mistakes, and team spirit. The Pennant Working Group is already starting work on preparations for next season. One of the options is to have a pre-season twilight match-play competition along the lines of the one conducted by Tasmania this year. Geoff Doig, their Pennant Co-ordinator has said he would be willing to help us organise it. We are also taking the initiative in seeking an early meeting of SMGA Pennant Co-ordinators to review the season just ended and to discuss changes to the arrangements for season 2004. Please do not hesitate to let us have your ideas.
