What struck me as odd in this story was that this girl, obviously mixed, tried to fit in with her conservative white peers and they in turn did not embrace her as one of their own. In my opinion a person is not defined by the color of his/her skin, and anyone who assumes that complexion is most important in humans is misconceived. The world today is made up of many different races and for one race to discriminate against another is entirely wrong. First of all this young girl denies her mother based on her insecurity and misconception of her roots.
