Topic: “Organizations exist in times of turbulent and unpredictable change; therefore planning would seem to be waste of time and money. Debate the validity/truth of this statement” Introduction We often look at large company such as Commonwealth Bank or Microsoft in USA, it seems that the company working very smoothly without facing any barrier in their everyday business, the money keep on flowing and it never stops, we all know how Microsoft make its profit nowadays, Billions! How they did that? Planning is one of the most popular issues that often occur in any company, do we need planning or not? No one can predict the future, even tomorrow, then why should we do any planning, we will be wasting our time planning this and that, but then the future is not as our prediction, then the whole planning will be useless. How giant company likes Microsoft sets its organization, do they use planning as well? Let’s take a look at each case on how the major leading company sets their organization and what will be the conclusion. Planning Planning seems to be useless nowadays, since the environment around us is keep on changing, we often plan something and unexpectedly, something happen and ruin our plan, just like our everyday lives, we plan to go for shopping and suddenly its raining, then the whole plan that we have made from the night before about what are we going to buy and what places will we go are junk now, because we cant make it. However, we cant denied that we also needs plan, just for example, a student in High School will have an exam in the following month, he then have to plan on when will he study each chapter of the book, if he don’t make any plan, then by the time the exam comes, he will be in rush to study on the night before, and of course if wont be effective. Commonwealth Bank is one of the giant company in Australia will make a good example. It seems that Bank will not need any plans, since the interest rate and all of other exchange rate is keep on changing, therefore there will be no planning can be made, isn’t it? The fact is, the still have a plan, but the plan is not about the interest rate, its just one thing they have to keep update on, they actually planning on each branch. Which branch is making the best profit, and which branch should be closed since they only have few customers, which area should they make a new branch due to large demands from the society. This whole thing needs a very big plan, for instance, whether they’re going to rent the place or buy the place, and how about the machinery? Cost will be the first thing to be planned, since banks get its profit by lending the customer money to other people with interest, how will they use this money to open a new branch without losing any profit. That’s just one example, then how about the newspapers? Herald Sun, one of the most profitable newspapers in Australia will also have a serious plan on their newspaper. How do they do that? The news is changing every second? Those questions might fly across your mind, isn’t it? But in fact, what they plan is not on the news, but more on how they will advertise their newspaper, so that more people will buy their newspaper, news might need some plans, they need to coordinate the press to cover stories from everywhere, but the plan will not as big as on the advertising plans. News is everyday stuff, not everyday have a very interesting story, but the newspaper might give some sport issues on every Thursday, or TV Guide every Friday, this might look simple, but many people will buy newspapers just for that part.
