Societal organization is carried out through the epic Beowulf to the time of the novel Frankenstein. Both nineteenth century Europe and Anglo-Saxon cultures also exclude “outside” figures, by the enormous monsters and dragons from Beowulf and the abnormal creature from Frankenstein. By defining monstrosity in a given way, the Beowulf author is able to give readers insight into his culture's definition of good and bad, right and wrong etc. Grendel is both "the enemy of man" and "God's enemy." His motives are simple and unambiguous: he is "moved by spite against human kind."
