War vs. Peace
The story “Editha” by William Dean Howells is a story about how glorious war is and how painful it can be. The author’s purpose is to present two different perspectives on war. Howells does this by showing the different ways the two main characters perceive war. ... George, her fiancé, on the other hand, despises war and doesn’t think it’s right to kill people and break world peace. Editha told George, “I call it a sacred war. A war for liberty and humanity, if ever there was one. ... ” She sees war as a liberation of people who have been struggling for years against the cruelest oppression.
