The Erie Canal
The Erie Canal was built during the 1800’s when today’s modern machinery had not even been thought off, even with the technologies we have at our discression today it would not be an easy task to accomplish. The people of that era were able to successfully build a canal of this magnitude and start a new of way of life for generations to come.
The Erie Canal was an outstanding achievement of its time, if you consider the types of material that were available at that time period, it was truly a work of art that such a canal could have been accomplished. The Erie Canal when completed will make a connection with New York and the Great Lakes via the Hudson River. After the American Revolution governor Morris first had the idea of a water Passage to link the Hudson River and Lake Erie, the canal when finished will span 360 miles (580km), by no means an easy task to accomplish in the 1800’s. ...
There were a number of survey’s done in 1809 on the area where the canal would be formed, to ensure the canal was built safe and cost effective.
