Catch – 22 by Joseph Heller is about learning to face and deal with death and survival. ... Yossarian tries to make an insanity plea, but because of Catch – 22, this plea is useless.
Catch – 22 is a rule stating: “Insane men who ask to be grounded prove themselves sane through a concern for personal safety, only those who are truly crazy ask to fly more missions. ... 55) Catch – 22 also involves a rule that gives commanding officers and military officials the power to create their own rules and it prevents pilots from being grounded no matter what their physical state is (If a pilot is sick, he cannot be grounded). Military officials raided a town and took all of the women and children, when the people wanted to know what they were taken away for the officers only said “Catch – 22.” Catch – 22 was just their excuse to ransack the town. Yossarian later finds out that Catch – 22 does not even exist, but he cannot prove it.
