The Color Purple is a very controversial novel. It is written by Alice Walker, who reveals many important lessons throughout the novel and in the controversial events she discusses. Such issues as racism, cruelty and abuse, rape, and meaningless marriages are some social issues discussed in this story. The main character, Celie, is subject to all of these issues. The story of her struggle in life is brilliantly told in this touching, blunt novel. The story takes place down in the South. It is told from Celie’s point of view, as she talks to god in epistolary form. She is not very intelligent, which is evident in her writing, which is of black dialect. Celie is an extremely obedient, quiet person. She does everything she is told and doesn’t think about talking back. Introverted would describe her character. She leads a very hard life with many struggles. There are few things that she cares about, such as her sister Nettie, and when these precious things are taken away, she doesn’t feel any emotions, but blindly drags through life. She has to put up with, who we know as her father, sexually abusing her at a very young age after her mother has become “worthless”. This occurs when Celie is only fourteen. When her father feels she has become to old to live at home, he gives her to a man to be his wife.
