The proles make up 85% of the population of Oceania in which they have much more freedom and less control, but at the same time they are much easier to control. They are unconfined, unlike Party members, and uncontrolled. The Outer Party is like the part of the power structure that does all the boring, menial tasks. They are like the day-to-day mechanism of the Party. The proles leas animalistic lives, and lack both the energy and interest to revolt. They grew up in the gutters, they went to work at twelve, they passed through a brief blossoming period of beauty and sexual desire, they married at twenty, they were middle-aged at thirty, and they died, for the most part, at sixty. The proles lived ordinary lives when compared to our society today.
