The New Rulers Dynasty- a royal family who survive on the throne from one generation to the next The most common form of government in Europe at the time was the hereditary monarchy. The three largest empires in Europe had them (England, France and Spain) France Louis XI (1461-1483) Louis XI left France more powerful than it ever was. He created the largest standing army in Europe at the time. Louis feared the noblemen, as they were the only people in the country who could unseat him from his power. He created an alliance with the townsmen, so that he would have a counter against any attack by the noblemen. To pay for the large army that he had, he created many taxes, so to increase the revenue of the crown. He was given the nickname “Spider” for his devious nature. Francis I (1515-1547) Francis was mostly known for his constant war mongering with Charles V. To keep fighting with him, Francis needed money, and thus like Louis XI, he came up with many creative ways to raise revenue. He also re-organized the government. Spain Charles V (1516-1556) Charles the fifth was the King of Spain, the Netherlands, and was also the Holy Roman Emperor.
