The Party Slogans
In Nineteen Eighty-Four, the ruling class of Oceania, ‘the Party’ has three slogans by which the society is governed: “War is Peace”, “Ignorance is Strength”, and “Freedom is Slavery”. ... What is not immediately apparent, however, is that their very structure incorporates one of the major principles of the Party, Doublethink, and that in order to understand their meaning the contradictions of each slogan must be closely scrutinized. ... In the world of 1984 the land masses are divided into three super-states, each in a constant state of warfare with the others. ...
The second slogan, “Ignorance is Strength” is the embodiment of Party discipline. This ignorance is what allows for continual and ever-growing power for the Party. ... Because mistakes and changes in policy are perceived as signs of weakness, history must be continually rewritten in order to prove that the Party is infallible. The Party lays claim to nearly every useful discovery of man, and any victory or new invention is immediately credited a direct result of Big Brother’s leadership and wisdom. ... The methods and teachings of the Party that allow for this are known as Crimestop, Blackwhite, and most important of all, Doublethink. ... It is the ability of instinctively ceasing at the threshold of any “unorthodox” thought, which is any thought that does not fall in line with Party principles. Moreover, if the thought might be harmful to Party ideology, or “Ingsoc”, Crimestop includes the failure to grasp analogies, to perceive logical errors, or to understand the simplest of arguments.
