Dole Food Company, with its headquarters in Westlake Village, California, is one of the few multinational corporations that control the worldwide trade of bananas. Dole bananas is produced in Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Philippines and the Canary Islands. In many of these countries, Dole has been allowing unfair labor conditions to continue.
In the past, Dole owned plantations for its banana production; however, beginning in the mid-1970s, Dole began subcontracting small producers, working on their own small plots of farmland, all over the world. Although Dole does grow some of its bananas on its own directly managed plantation, its most profitable farms are the collective farms managed on their own by the 200 or so small landowners.
