Romanticism By: Rishi Aggarwal January 19, 2002 Romanticism was a specific period of time in Europe during the early 1800s. Romantic painters based their work on sentiment and imagination. They also dealt with the "romance" in life, or a life as they wished it would be rather than how life actually is. JMW Turner was one of the many romantic painters of this time. In his painting “Sowing Of Grain”, JMW Turner shows a definite resemblance to the romantic paintings. The theme in the picture is based on JMW Turner’s perspective that the painstaking task of farming was respected a lot by the few farmers remaining. This portrays all the hard labor that was occurring at the time by the few remaining farmers. The painting also shows JMW Turner criticizing the society and making a statement that all people of the time should have been working equally and not forcing certain people to do all the labor themselves.
