Respect… is one of the big meaningful words in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. The old man Santiago has respect for the big Marlin that he hooks when he is out at sea. The young boy had respect for the old man. He took care of him in every way possible; he also did a lot of favors for him. The old man was fixed on The Great DiMaggio; he always compared himself to DiMaggio. Respect… is a great thing to give and a great feeling to receive. Santiago went out on his skiff early one morning prepared and ready to catch a catch of all catches. He has been empty handed for forty days now but he never gives up. He paddles out far enough so he can’t see to much more land. He casts a couple lines out and waits waits, waits and tug. He’s got a 1500 pound fish tugging on his line. The old likes to talk to the fish before he catches it, the first words out of his mouth are “Fish I love you, I respect you but I must kill you.” He also whispers out loud “Fish, I’ll stay with you until I’m dead.” That shows a lot of emotion and dedication towards the fish because the old man has this great respect for him and only him.
