On the morning of June 15, 1389 in central kosoco, a large serb army that was led by prince lazar met and army commended by the Turkish sultan murat. murat seemed to have won the battle of kosovo, but both murat and lazar were killed. The turks then continued to advance northwest throught the balkans, in 1459 serbai had become turkish province. Their country was attacked for no apparent reason other than to conquer. Even though the serbs had lost the battle, and kosovo transformed into a turkish country, this event was looked upon as a glorious triumph in serb history. In 1948 the president of Yuogslavia had a disagreement with the Former USSR. Albania being a communist state sided with the USSR. Most the of albanians living in parts of yugoslavia, such as kosovo, were viewed as "enemies of the state". For this, many albanian homes were searched and forced close to 100,000 albanians to flee to turkey. In 1967, President Tito publically criticized the treatment of albanians in kosovo. Many serbs were outraged. President Tito annouced that the albanian flag could be flown and an albanian university was to be opened in Pristina.
