Performance enhancing substances have been associated with sport for over two millennia and cheating in order to improve performance may have been present in sport that the same number of years. Taking a substance to enhance ones performance is a form of cheating, thus providing the athlete an unfair advantage. ... Although they did not have access to the stimulants that athletes do today, as they also would have most probably taken them to increase an already unfair level of performance. The history of drugs and substances in sport is long, so the recurring stories in the media of athletes today are no longer as scandalous as they may once have been. ... All sports reject the use of performance enhancing substances to gain an advantage and the coaches and officials must relay that message, as it is not accepted. Athlete’s that are under the influence of performance enhancing substances are ‘unnatural’, while the drug free athlete’s are ‘natural’. The terminology and use of ‘unnatural’ and ‘natural’ are simple to grasp, it is neither fair nor excepted to take drugs to gain an advantage, and so it is therefore ‘unnatural’. ...

The negative health issues need to be presented to showcase that taking performance enhancing substances is not only an unfair advantage but can cause serious damage. Once an athlete is exposed to performance enhancing substances either by previous experience or word of mouth they can become addictive, making an athletes desire to win paramount. There needs to be public awareness to the fact, performance enhancing substances are damaging to an athletes body. ... However, if athletes can learn about new performance enhancing substances through other competitors faster then scientists are stopping them, there has to be concern for the clean and nourishing event sport was designed to be. Being able to use performance enhancing substances in sport is contrary to the foundations of sport itself. ... Being able to use performance enhancing substances is ‘unnatural’ results in an athlete being more chemically ready opposed to physically ready producing unfair advantages.
