... Except what is “vertical engagement”? ... According to Birkerks, “Only where silence is possible can the vertical engagement take place”(77). Yet intensity of thought can still be located in places like, church, condensed offices of therapists, and in authentic works of art, for we find vertical engagement in our true aesthetic experiences. “The beauty of the vertical engagement is that it does not have to argue for itself. ... I didn’t have a really thorough understanding so I read it again and thought more about the vertical engagement concept. ... It’s almost as if to say we are ignorant to the process of vertical engagement. Birkerts says that basically, vertical engagement only takes place in reading and art, except who is Birkerts to determine what qualifies as an inspirational aesthetic experience? Aesthetic experience varies between every person and maybe that’s all vertical engagement is; being at peace and totally immersed in our environment. ... In order to practice the method of vertical engagement, we must figure out what, out of all the lateral information, to engage in deep thought about. ... There are points in time when people are immersed in a text because they are interested in it, therefore they engage vertically, but I don’t think it is necessary to slip into vertical engagement with every reading experience. ... Realistically, I think that vertical engagement can take place only on our own terms. Every person has a different source of aesthetic experience, what Birkerts seems to fail to understand, is that reading, art and a therapist are not the only existing outlets to true vertical engagement.
