Jane does indeed succeed in gaining liberty, power knowledge and adventure over the course of the novel. ... As a young child Jane had previously depended on the Reedfs and because of this dependence, they had the means to tie the girl down and force her into submission. However, eight years later, when Jane has gone back she receives the Reedfs with out holding a grudge. ... This for Jane is liberty. Jane has power because she can make her own decisions and often exercises the right to do so. ... Jane doesnft want to demote herself to the rank of mistress, she has a great deal of respect for herself and does not let a man take it away.
