Mason came to Boston to teach, and immediately set out with two goals: (1) Creating a higher standard for singing in school teaching and (2) Improving the overall quality of the material being taught. Mason believed that "any child who could read, could sing", and that music should be available to every child ("Historical Overview"). In 1836, Mason proposed to the Boston school board that music should be included in elementary schools. ... After seeing the success of his work, Mason returned to Boston in 1826.
