No Exit response

From the very beginning, Garcin wanted someone to tell him that he was not a coward for fleeing to Mexico during the war in Rio de Janeiro. Garcin lies about himself to Inez and Estelle and says that he ran a pacifist paper and was shot because he took a stand against war. He then asks them, “And now, tell me, do you think it’s a crime to stand by one’s principles?” (16). By twisting the truth, this becomes Garcin’s first attempt to gain approval of his cowardly death. Although Estelle has compassion for Garcin, Inez is immediately aware of Garcin’s dishonesty and harshly points out that they might as well be honest with each other, since they are “all tarred with the same brush” (16). Garcin then tries to gain approval from Estelle. In effect, he even begs Estelle to say that he is not a coward.
