The hospital room remains dark throughout the excruciating hours. The only light that shines is given off from the bed set in the middle of the room. In it lies my best friend Amanda Baker, a 15-year old girl diagnosed with anemia. As I sit outside waiting for the doctor to arrive, I take one more look at her. Seeing her dressed in a bland green nightgown with patches on her arms make me wonder why she was in such a position. Anemia? I don’t think they mentioned it in Mr. Barlow’s health class. Suddenly the door opens and in steps the doctor. I ask him to explain to me what anemia is. ‘Anemia is a blood condition involving an abnormal reduction in the number of red blood cells.’ I ask him, “She’s not going to die, is she?” ‘No, it can be treated.
